In the previous document Step by step tutorial - setting up SAP DB Control Center in SAP HANA SPS 09 (part 1), we've already set up SAP DB Control Center in SAP HANA system A and accessed it successfully.

Remember our following scenario. We've finished the first part, so in this document let's have a look what we can do with the above four tiles. We'll first add SAP HANA system B, then start/stop it and monitor its alerts and health. Like the previous tutorial, you can also follow the detailed guide from the official guide SAP DB Control Center 4 Guide - SAP Library, I just make some notes and give some window dumps here.

Scenario

I have installed two SAP HANA SPS 09 rev. 91 single containers. Let's name them system A and B. What I want to do is setting up SAP DB Control Center in one SAP HANA system (A) and monitoring another SAP HANA system (B).

Monitoring APCA

First let's have a look what we can monitor. We can use SAP DB Control Center to check the following KPIs of various databases at the high level, i.e., availability, performance, capacity and alerts (APCA). If necessary, we can drill down to detailed information and we can even access the cockpits of databases. The following paragraph is quoted from About SAP DB Control Center - SAP DB Control Center 4 Guide - SAP Library

Status displays focus on four high-level areas:

  • Availability - is the system running and accessible on the network? Is it able to serve the business needs of its users, including humans and applications? Performance and capacity issues can affect availability.
  • Performance - is the system meeting the response time expectations of database users, including humans and applications?
  • Capacity - is the system meeting its service level agreements?
  • Alerts - are there errors to resolve or event messages that need review? Alert events, given priorities of high, medium, or low, are triggered when the system exceeds state and range thresholds set by system and database administrators.
